Flight School: Air Jordan XI
Take your drawing pad and pencil out for this week’s Star Club Flight School… Ask ten different people what their favorite pair of Air Jordans are and you’ll get more answers than His Airness did rings. But we’re willing to bet you’d also hear the Air Jordan XI mentioned more than once. Arguably the most popular Jordan release of all time (with a respectful nod to the I and III), the XI combined a sleek design, innovative materials and functional support to create a timeless sneaker – on and off the court.
The genius of Tinker Hatfield was on full display in the XI design process as he famously drew inspiration from exotic convertibles – among other things. Originally released in anticipation of MJ’s comeback to basketball in 1995, the XI evolved to have a life of its own with over twenty unique retro’ed variations. Some of which have developed cult followings of their own; notably including the Space Jams, Concords and Columbias. Like most other Jordan releases, the XI was part art project, part athlete’s tool. It’s no wonder its stood the test of time and continues to be seen on the feet of fortunate sneakerheads worldwide.
