Kendrick Lamar “Controls” The Rap Internet

One week ago, Big Sean dropped an exclusive track, rumored to be on his forthcoming album Hall of Fame, that got bloggers blogging, tweeters tweeting and ‘puters puting. But it wasn’t Sean’s verse that had the internet buzzing. Kendrick Lamar, known as the Hottest MC in the Game, according to MTV’s brain-trust anyways, delivered an attention-stealing 16 (and then some) much to the dismay of many East Coast rhyme-slingers. Early in his verse, K.Dot labels himself the King of New York, a claim once boldly made by LA rapper Kurupt, at the height of the infamous East vs. West rap rivalry. Though Kendrick’s bar came across as more competitive than malicious, that hasn’t prevented many New York MCs from standing their ground — even if they weren’t specifically name-dropped in the track.

So far, artists including Papoose, Joell Ortiz, King Los, Cassidy, JR Writer, Lupe Fiasco and Joe Budden have recorded their respective responses to Mr. Lamar. We enjoyed a couple, but as Jay Z in ’01 would say, the rest were ehhhhh. Which one were you feeling the best? And more importantly, who do you hope responds to Kendrick next on wax? Let us know in the comments below.
