Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao is Boxing’s Detox
Another day, another disappointment for boxing fans hoping to see a battle between the sport’s best. A Mayweather/Pacquiao super-fight has been rumored for years but due to internal and external factors has yet to occur. And it looks like fans will have to wait even longer – at least until after Mayweather’s impending jail sentence – as Mayweather has signed on to fight junior-middleweight champion Miguel Cotto on May 5th. Never one to mince words, Mayweather followed the decision with a harsh tweet directed at Pacquiao: “I’m fighting Miguel Cotto because Miss Pac Man is ducking me.” Though Cotto should prove to be one of Mayweather’s tougher opponents, the boxing world collectively sighed at the announcement as the dream bout between Mayweather and Pacquiao is starting to mirror Dr. Dre’s oft-delayed and equally hyped Detox..Will it ever happen? Perhaps. Certainly, Bob Arum knows more than we do but frankly we wouldn’t count on it. With anticipation beginning to fade to apathy, the pressure is on both camps to work out some sort of agreement. Whether it takes Olympic style drug testing, a 50-50 purse split or help from Captain Planet, one thing’s for sure: The fans won’t wait on Mayweather and Pacquiao forever.
Look out for Detox. Oh – and pray for a miracle or two.
