Throwback Thursday: A Look Back At The ’96 – ’97 NBA Draft Class
With the 10 year anniversary of the 2003 NBA Draft upon us, much has been said about the significance of the alumni from that respective class. After all, stars like Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh don’t come around too often. Oh yeah, and a guy by the name of LeBron James — you may have heard of him — is simply the icing on an already stacked cake. However, are those names enough to make 2003 the greatest year in NBA draft history?
Not if the 1996 draft class has anything to say about it. Led by a once in a generation player in Kobe Bryant and several of the game’s best ever — Allen Iverson, Ray Allen and Steve Nash — the 1996 draft class was loaded from top to bottom. Names like Stephon Marbury, Marcus Camby and Jermaine O’Neal may not be held with the same esteem they once were, however their legacy is firmly cemented in the game’s history books. As a collective, no class ran deeper or collected as much hardware. I guess you could say the 1997 Class had it all — NBA Champions, MVPs, All NBA’ers and All Stars.
Where will the 2013 Class stack against these two classic Draft years? That’s for history to decide. We’ll be waiting and watching though
